Entries for Adfam’s Family Voices Competition 2019 are now open!
Family Voices is our annual poetry and creative writing competition for friends and family members who have been affected by someone else’s substance misuse. It’s a great opportunity to express your thoughts and feelings in a creative and constructive way. While we know it is often difficult to talk about this subject, many family members have told us they find it helpful and therapeutic to write about it.
We encourage you to think positively when writing your entry. Sometimes it can be difficult to focus on the positives when faced with difficult challenges, but it can also be motivating, and can give us the extra strength to survive and overcome tough times. Try and reflect positively on your relationship with your loved one, rather than focusing on the challenges.
Not sure where to start? Maybe start off by reading some poetry or short stories for inspiration, or sit with a friend and talk about your experiences. Have a notebook and pen handy, and jot down any key words, phrases, or emotions that come into your mind. If you are involved in a family support service or peer support group, consider talking to the organiser or fellow members, and perhaps you could share ideas or spend some time together working on your entries.
All entries must be received by 31 October, and winners will be notified by 12 November.
There is a grand prize of £150 for the winner and prizes of £100 each for two runners up, as well as two VIP tickets to Adfam’s Carol Concert at St Bride’s Church on Fleet Street on 4th December, plus travel and one night’s accommodation. All three entries will be read out on the night by a celebrity guest speaker, who will also present the winners with their prize.
