The 2017 Family Voices Competition Winner

30 Jan 2018

BBC presenter Razia Iqbal with Family Voices Competition winner Jane Taylor.

Adfam’s Family Voices Competition allows friends and family members who have lived through someone else’s substance use to express their thoughts and feelings in a creative and constructive way.

Congratulations to this year’s winner, Jane Taylor, who was presented with her prize at our annual Carol Concert at the start of December.

Read the winning entry below, which Jane wrote to thank Hetty’s for their support.

Congratulations as well to the runners up: Just One More by Natasha Landini and To Whoever This May Touch by Anonymous.

Friendly Stranger

By Jane Taylor

I was at the end of my tether, I hid it well, I had to keep caring so I just couldn’t tell,

And then it happened, that final day, I hit rock bottom and I just had to say,

My mind was in turmoil and I felt in danger, when along came Hetty’s the friendliest of strangers,

Hetty’s opened their door and welcomed me in, they did not judge me or make me feel weak,

With words of comfort they gently persuaded me back onto my feet,

And now with Hetty’s love and support I’m finding my feet and learning to walk,

My journey is emotional and my path sometimes troubled

But I’m no longer trapped by an invisible bubble,

My destination is a new place where I’ve never been,

a place where I will be happy and free, a place where I’ll feel safe and can finally be me

So I’ll stay on this path until my journey’s end,

And be eternally grateful to Hetty’s, no longer a stranger but now Hetty’s my friend.
