New IAS research on off-trade alcohol availability and violence

A new study by the Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS) shows that home drinking is a major contributor to alcohol-related violence. The study analyses police-recorded violent crime data from during the COVID-19 pandemic when access to on-trade premises like pubs and restaurants was closed, and found that this did not lead to major changes in the levels of alcohol-related violence.

The findings suggest attempts to address alcohol-related violence cannot solely consider on-trade settings – especially those interventions targeting alcohol-related domestic violence.
