MPs Christian Wakeford and Dan Carden working together to tackle alcohol harm

On Tuesday 3 August 2021, ITV News published an interview with MPs Christian Wakeford and Dan Carden to share their own personal experiences of alcohol, and how they are working together by crossing party lines to take a stand against the harm caused by alcohol.

Christian Wakeford, a Conservative MP, spoke about how he lost his brother to alcohol dependency and the devastating impact this had on his family, whilst Dan Carden, a Labour MP, recently shared his own experience of alcohol dependency in a moving testimony in a House of Commons debate.

Both Dan and Christian sit on the All Party Parliamentary Group on Alcohol Harm (APPG) which aims to promote discussion, and make recommendations to Government on policy related to reducing alcohol harm, including a specific alcohol addiction strategy which:

  • tackles the increased availability of excessively cheap alcohol
  • improves messaging so people can make informed decisions about their drinking
  • provides adequate support and treatment for people struggling with dependency on alcohol
