New NICE quality standard on coexisting severe mental illness and substance misuse

National Institute for Health and Care and Excellence (NICE) have produced a new quality standard which covers the assessment, management and care provided for people aged 14 and over who have coexisting severe mental illness and substance misuse. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.

It highlights that people should not be excluded from mental health services because of coexisting substance misuse or from substance misuse services because of coexisting severe mental illness.

NICE regularly update their quality standards to help health-based professionals improve the quality of care they provide or commission.
