We are really sorry to share the news that Bernie Carr died last month.

Many of us at Adfam knew Bernie through his active role in the Alcohol and Families Alliance. Bernie was a prominent member of the AFA’s Steering Group for many years and played a huge role in championing the AFA and the needs of families affected by substance use.

Bernie was also an advocate for people with lived experience of addiction and played a leading lived experience advocacy role for CGL nationally and also at his local service in Bromley. He was also a Lived Experience Contractor for the Royal College of Psychiatrists, carrying out a range of roles and sitting on a number of committees and advisory groups relating to alcohol and addiction, providing expert advice.

Prior to his work championing lived experience in addiction, Bernie was a civil servant working in a number of different roles and offices within the Ministry of Justice.

Bernie was a highly respected, popular and influential figure across the addiction field and he will be greatly missed by so many.

All of us at Adfam, and the Alcohol and Families Alliance send our deepest condolences to Bernie’s family at this time.

Bernie’s funeral took place on 26th July, and Berrnie’s son Paul has set up a Gofundme page if you would like to make a contribution.
