Adfam is pleased to publish a literature review which explores the stigma experienced by children affected by parental substance use.
Children of parents with alcohol or drug addiction often face severe stigma, leading to feelings of shame and isolation. Societal perceptions can make these children feel different or “abnormal”. This stigma leads to alienation, both at school and within their communities, making it harder for children to seek help. As a result, these children may struggle with mental health issues and face other challenges in adulthood. Raising awareness and training professionals who work closely with these children is crucial to providing the support they desperately need.
It is imperative that we prioritise the needs of children affected by parental substance misuse, as they are the ones who often bear the brunt of the emotional, physical, and social consequences of addiction.
