I have a wife and 4 kids, 6 dogs and 3 cats. Two of the kids are from a previous marriage so they are in out of the house regularly as we have a decent relationship with my x. My sister in law lives in a neighboring town and has the 2 kids, husband and her mom living under her roof.

My wife and her my sister in law have high profile jobs in the community, my brother in law works for a retailer and I am self employed.

So that’s our background which is important to the story as you will soon see.

So back to my 13 year old nephew. As I had mentioned he was a great athlete, smarter than most, and overly energetic. The problem was his parents didn’t match his intensity. So he would start karate and then have to quit because so one would take him and so on so on. My mother in law tried to fill the gap but she was battling cancer so her energy was low as well. So here’s this kids busting with energy but having to quit everything because nobody had the time to get him there.

It’s the story that we hear so many times “idle hands are ….workshop” or “kids that aren’t involved in good things will turn to bad things”.

I’m not a huge believer in that, but at this point all cards are the table. My father in law and mother in law would talk daily and although I would only get bits of third hand information from my wife I began to hear concerns about my nephew’s drinking problem? I began to hear of empty liquor bottles missing pain medications etc. BUT, the one constant was make sure his mom or dad don’t find out because they are going to beat him to death. Looking back now, my first move should have been to go straight over there and find out what was happening. Try to put a stop to it or find someone who could. But we all know that’s not the way it works. So everyone was involved in this huge cover up to protect him when all we did was hurt him.
