      Hello,

I am new the forum and would appreciate some advice. My beloved brother who is in his mid forties, has struggled with alcoholism for a long time. Things came to a head in November last year and he was lucky enough to go to a long term rehab until mid February. He came out, clean and optimistic. The Coronavirus then struck and I am sure has had a massive impact on many people’s recovery. Sadly, I met up with him in a park last week and was shocked as he was completely drunk to the point where I had to take him home. His flat was full of empty vodka bottles. We have talked it through but I can’t see what else I can do apart from offer help which I have. It is so hard to leave him alone when I know he is drinking and not looking after himself. He has clearly been drinking again for some time and I am so worried he won’t be able to stop. Thank you for reading.

It’s really tough isn’t it. Have you tried asking him about his local Alcohol service, as they are all still working and most of them are offering virtual groups including AA and NA fellowships.

Sadly, like anyone addicted they have to want help. The trouble with alcohol is it’s a depressant so his low mood will only exacerbate his intake. I wonder if his key worker from the previous rehab would reach out? Worth a shot, to remind him what he can achieve?

All you can do is encourage him to seek support, and look after yourself.

He probably needs to tell his GP also for a Review of his health.

      Best of luck ????

Thank you for your kind response. I know his key worker rang him on Monday as I rang their helpline on Sunday and asked if they would. He is being very stubborn and just keeps saying he knows what to do in between getting annoyed. It’s good advice to keep encouraging so I will do that and will suggest GP too. Thank you!
