My Dad was diagnosed with cancer in Jan 2013. During this time, he was prescribed Morphine by his doctor to help with the pain from his cancer treatment. Not only did this drug take the physical pain away, it also helped him mentally and took all depression away. Fortunately in October 2013, he was given the ‘all clear’ however the Morphine addiction and depression still remained. During the last 3 months, his Morphine addiction has got to the worst it possibly can. As his doctor would not prescribe him anymore Morphine, he started to buy it off drug dealers (makes me sick!). He is not like this, never ever taken drugs before in his life. It’s just awful. He is drinking Morphine by the bottle – daily. This makes him hallucinate. Days where the Morphine is not available, he will turn to alcohol. This consists of drinking spirits and wine, bottle after bottle. He recently got so intoxicated, he fell down the stairs and smashed his face on the tile flooring, causing a minor bleed on his brain. He ended up in hospital for a week but discharged himself, came home and carried on drinking. I ask him if he wants to die and he swears blind that he doesn’t. I cry to him and ask him to get help but he just makes excuses as to why he “cant” go to rehab. I really don’t know what else I can do. How can I help someone that won’t help themselves? Do I just expect the worst now?
