I have just had the worst night of my life. my son, who is 28 has been a relatively functioning alcoholic for around 7 years but in the last few months he has become much worse which has resulted in him losing his job and girlfriend. he is now back at home with me and my husband (his step dad) on the sofa. He started drinking on Friday which lasted until last night when he tried to commit suicide. We had no choice but to call the police, he had completely lost it. The police then spent all night looking for him. I was up all night sick with worry and fear. He eventually turned up this morning, in tears, shaking and of course sorry. I have taken him to the doctors this morning, who were really good and now are having to take the slow process of him recovering, we hope but the stress and worry it has caused to the rest of us has been horrific. I have never felt so helpless in my life, I just don’t know how we are going to cope the next few months, I dread thinking about him coming home so drunk again, being verbally abusive (I’m to blame for everything) and destroying the house. My husband had to restrain him on the floor at one point. How do families cope, I am really struggling.

      Hi Bethany,

Thank you for posting. I’m so sorry to read what a terrible time you are having and that you feel so helpless.
I work for a charity called The Icarus Trust that supports the friends and families who are dealing with a loved one’s addiction. We know how very hard and stressful this is so we offer a free service called ‘Family Friends ‘ that you might want to use. These are our experienced trained volunteers who would understand just what you are going though. Talking with one of them might help you to feel less helpless and more able to cope. They would also be able to signpost you to other services that are available.
You can contact us on help@icarustrust.org or visit the website http://www.icarustrust.org
I do hope that this is helpful and that you are able to get some help and support.
