It’s been going on with my mum for 15 since I was in high school. She is 53 now and still hiding bottles of wine (at least it’s not gin now) in her wardrobe and finds ways not to eat meals so she can get drunk quicker. My dad now doesn’t realise when she is drunk (slurring/sleepy/aggravated/quiet) as he’s so used to it. She has ‘given up’ drinking and is signed up to a rehab centre and is going to meetings once a week but won’t let us go and doesn’t like talking about what happens so just makes me believe she isn’t going. She has tried AA before but said it wasn’t for her, has been through counselling and the psychologist said he didn’t need to see her anymore. Ive had the ‘health’ talk with her so many times and she says she understands and will stop. Then a couple of weeks later when I’m home I find another bottle. I really thought the rehab centre would help her but now I just don’t know what to do. Can anyone suggest anything else? She won’t go the docs because she’s scared of what they’ll say. Should I go and talk to them myself? I feel drink has taken away so much of her already.

      Hi PeaceLily,
it must be really hard for you trying to cope with the worry of your mum’s drinking. If you would like to talk to someone who has experience of what you are going through you might like to get in touch with The Icarus Trust. We are a charity that was set up especially to support the families and friends of addicts. Talking to one of our experienced trained volunteers might help you to find a way ahead.
