Diverse families

Including diverse families

Completed in 2010, this Big Lottery-funded project aimed to develop the awareness, understanding and skills of existing family support services to work with:

  • Men
  • People from minority ethnic groups
  • People living in rural communities
  • Lesbians, gay men and bisexual people

As well as delivering training programmes on supporting men affected by someone else’s substance use and developing inclusive and sensitive practice for LGBT and BME communities, the project produced a number of resources.

Including diverse families: good practice guidelines (pdf)

This guide to developing inclusive and sensitive practice was a major output of the project. This resource is aimed at professionals working with families affected by someone else’s drug or alcohol use and includes information on how to better integrate work with rural communities, LGBT families, black and minority ethnic groups and men.

Including diverse families posters

Part of opening up a service to different groups involves displaying openness to, and awareness of, their needs. These posters (A3 and A4) display positive images of under-represented groups and are available to order free from Adfam. They can also be viewed and printed from the following links:

Journeys booklets

Including Diverse Families also produced two new Journeys booklets to add to the existing catalogue. These new booklets, for men and LGBT families, use real-life case studies to discuss the particular impact of someone else’s drug use on life.
